The DVLA only offers previously unissued registration numbers for sale, and doesn't buy back numbers. If you want to sell your number we suggest you approach a private dealer or advertise the number for sale yourself. A selection of dealers can be found here:
The DVLA does not endorse or recommend any particular individual or company, and the DVLA will not accept responsibility for any issues arising from this referral or the content of third party websites.
You can apply to transfer it by completing a 'V317 - Application to transfer or retain a vehicle registration number'. The cost to transfer it is £80.00.
For more information and to download the form, click here:
You can apply to take a registration off a vehicle using the DVLA online service www.gov.uk/keep-registration-number, this will allow you to transfer it to another vehicle (using our online service www.gov.uk/put-registration-number-vehicle) or hold it on a Certificate of Retention (V778) until you want to use it again.
The Certificate of Entitlement (V778) will be valid for 10 years. Should the registration not be assigned within that 10 year period the certificate can be extended for a further 10 years at no additional cost.
There is no discount for private companies who buy from the DVLA. The price and the purchase process is exactly the same whether you are a private or a business customer.
There are many private companies that buy and sell personalised registrations. The registrations they sell may be from their own stock of numbers that they have purchased from the DVLA, or they may be numbers that have been transferred or retained from their customers' vehicles.
They also advertise registrations that are still available direct from the DVLA.
If you have seen a registration number advertised cheaper than the DVLA, check to make sure there are no extra charges to be added to the final price. Remember, the DVLA's prices include VAT and DVLA fees.
If you are the Nominee named on the Certificate of Entitlement (V750) or Retention Document (V778), you can request the Purchaser or Grantee details. There is a fee of £5.00 for this service. You must explain why you are requesting the details and when you purchased the registration number. Please write to
